Putting the ‘SUPER’ in Superfoods

Superfoods and their super nutrients have been explored and discussed between nutritionists for years. Today superfoods are still a very hot topic, in fact experts say dozens of easy-to-find superfoods can help ward off heart disease, cancer, cholesterol and more.

"Superfood" is a term sometimes used to describe food with high phytonutrient content that may confer health benefits as a result. These foods are powerful because they contain multiple disease-fighting nutrients. They are also filling without excess calories, making them easy to include in a weight loss plan. This is important to note because of the effect diets can have on the body. Diet and foods often directly affect weight loss effort as discussed in the Eat-Clean 10|10|80 philosophy. Food impacts the body through the digestive process as nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream. A healthy diet that includes superfoods can help maintain a healthy weight and fight disease which aids in a longer and healthier life.

Every superfood is unprocessed and wholesome on its own. They are chock-full of powerful nutrients and vitamins. There are many categories of superfoods, and some are said to be better than others, mostly because they may provide more natural nutrients than another. Eaten regularly, these superfoods help satisfy the recommendations of the U.S. government's 2005 Dietary Guideline, providing nutrients that are typically missing from American diets.

As with any other food, portion size of superfoods still matters. Taking more liberties when eating super veggies is acceptable, but using portion control for other superfoods, such as nuts, while dieting is still

Here are Top 5 Superfoods that are full of flavor and usually easy to find at the local supermarket:

1. Eggs
With all the nutrients they contain, eggs are a superfood. Try incorporating eggs into breakfast routine especially if with a weight loss program because the protein they contain aids with feeling full longer.

2. Yogurt
Yogurt is actually higher in calcium than other dairy products. As a superfood, yogurt is enriched with probiotics for a healthy balance of ‘good’ bacteria for the digestive track. As a diet food, it's also extremely convenient on-the-go.

3. Nuts
Nuts are high in protein, heart-healthy fats, fiber and antioxidants. For this reason they are a superfood, but watch your portions! Eating a handful of nuts on a daily basis can add up and result in some weight gain. One single almond contains 7 calories, so a handful of 20 nuts is already 140 calories; 10-15 almonds can make a healthy 100-calorie snack but don't over do it.

4.  Blueberries
Bright blue in color and packed with antioxidants and phytoflavinoids, blueberries are also high in potassium and vitamin C. Not only can they lower the risk of heart disease and cancer, they are anti-inflammatory which makes them a key driver to help fight many chronic diseases.

5. Broccoli
Broccoli is a popular and favorite green veggies because it's available all year round! It’s also rich in vitamin A, C and K that supports strong bones. Green veggies like broccoli also contain plenty of fiber, which help with a healthy diet and weight loss plan.
