Medifast is a weight-loss plan geared toward those who are severely obese. On the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan you limit your caloric intake to between 800-1000 calories per day, spread across six meals per day.

Five of the meals are provided by Medifast, and the sixth is a “lean and green” meal you prepare yourself.

The food from Medifast includes 70 choices

  • Shakes
  • Soups
  • Stew
  • Chili
  • Oatmeal
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Fruit drinks, iced teas, hot drinks
  • Bars
  • Puddings

In essence, this falls somewhere between a complete meal-replacement program (where you drink shakes instead of meals) and a full meal-delivery system.

The Medifast 5 & 1 Plan creates a mild “fat-burning state” in your body called ketosis. At the same time, you should be eating enough to feel full. The combination should allow you to lose weight quickly while preserving muscle tissue.

Medifast offers individual 5 & 1 Plans specifically tailored toward men, women, and diabetics.  Once you’ve reached your target weight, Medifast provides a common sense guide to aid you through the transition and maintenance phases.

The Medifast plan encourages you to exercise, but be careful because of the steep drop in caloric intake when you begin the routine. If you are not exercising all ready, you need to wait before starting; if you do have an exercise routine, it is recommended that you cut back by 50 percent during your first 2-3 weeks on Medifast.

All in all: A very low calorie weight loss plan with delivered meals and meal substitutes geared for severly obese. Keeping your body in a mild “fat-burning state” - ketosis - prevents hunger pangs. The combination should allow you to lose weight quickly while preserving muscle tissue.

Tough but gets the job done

Submitted by Greg on Fri, 12/11/2009 - 10:35.

I have been obese nearly all of my adult life. I had tried a few diets here and there, but nothing really stuck. I knew I had to make a drastic change so I decided to try Medifast, since its made for people who are very overweight and not just people who want to lose a few pounds. After trying it for a few months, I have lost about 10 pounds and am content with eating less. It was hard at the beginning not to binge on junk food, but I have learned how to control my cravings a lot more. I am going to continue with this plan and hope to continue to lose weight.t

Feel Fuller Longer

Having a hard time filling full? Try eating some beans!. They work to curb your between-meal appetite and give you fiber and protein. In fact, one-half cup of pinto beans or kidney beans has around 8 grams fiber and 7 grams of protein, all for about 110 calories.

Oil Substitutes

Most oils have 120 calories per tablespoon. Reduce those calories by using low-salt chicken broth when cooking food in a pan and replace 1/2 the the oil required when baking with applesauce!
