The South Beach Diet was developed by Dr. Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a way to help his heart patients control their weight. He recognized that his patients had trouble sticking to a strict no-fat diet, so developed an approach that focused on reducing quickly digested carbohydrates that cause a rapid increase in blood sugar. Unlike diets like Atkins where carbs are avoided altogether, the South Beach Diet finds room for vegetables, beans, and whole grains. It also pushes you away from trans-fats and unsaturated fats towards saturated fats and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

The South Beach Diet leads you through three phases
towards a total change in eating habits. By the third phase, you should be settled in to a “diet for life.”

Phase One is designed to break your cravings for carbohydrates. Although you get to enjoy three full meals a day, plus snacks, you do have to eliminate bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, and baked goods. Even fruit is forbidden – as are candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, and sugar. Beer and alcohol is out, too. The saving grace is that the diet begins to ease up after 14 days. In the meantime, you’ll enjoy how the weight is starting to melt away.

Phase Two lasts until you reach your target weight. Now vegetables are allowed in moderation, and the occasional glass of wine or beer is okay. You’re learning to identify foods that your body digests gradually without throwing loads of sugar into the system. With your cravings under control, this becomes more and more easy.

Phase Three begins once you’ve reached your target weight
and is intended to last for the rest of your life. There are no hard-and-fast rules about what you can’t eat, but now that you’ve been broken of the carb/sugar habit, you’re food choices are naturally going to be healthier.

South Beach Diet works!

I have to admit the first phase of the South Beach Diet was pretty hard. I had to change my routine (morning bagel and coffee) and no beer! I also couldn't eat the bars I used to eat after working out.

But once that's over, you get used to eating more healthy and it's not so bad. It took a bit to get to Phase 3, but at least in Phase 2, I could have a beer now and then. I wasn't used to eating several times a day, so that was a change, but now I look forward to it and I notice I don't have energy ups and downs.

I think this diet works great if you couple it with some kind of consistent exercise program. Through some of the online support tools, I was in touch with other people and got inspired to start doing things outside vs. just working out in the gym. Now I hike and play basketball.

I'm really glad this weight loss plan is online, it helps you stay focused and figure out what to eat when you're changing your eating habits. Like I said, it's a little tough in the beginning, but when you start seeing results, it's all worth it! I have more energy and feel much healthier!

Feel Fuller Longer

Having a hard time filling full? Try eating some beans!. They work to curb your between-meal appetite and give you fiber and protein. In fact, one-half cup of pinto beans or kidney beans has around 8 grams fiber and 7 grams of protein, all for about 110 calories.

Oil Substitutes

Most oils have 120 calories per tablespoon. Reduce those calories by using low-salt chicken broth when cooking food in a pan and replace 1/2 the the oil required when baking with applesauce!
